The British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS), in partnership with Bone & Joint Research (BJR), is delighted to invite applications for the 2027 BORS–BJR Travelling Fellowship.
The Travelling Fellowship is BORS’s most prestigious award, supporting the professional development of early- and mid-career researchers through international research exchange, collaboration and networking.
The 2027 Fellowship will support a multidisciplinary cohort of 3–4 researchers to undertake a programme of visits to leading orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research centres across Europe in September 2027, culminating at the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS) 2027 Annual Meeting.
What Does the Fellowship Offer?
The Fellowship provides an opportunity to:
- Present and discuss research with internationally recognised researchers.
- Visit leading European research centres and gain insight into different research environments, methodologies and facilities.
- Exchange expertise and establish new international collaborations.
- Explore opportunities for future collaborative research, funding and knowledge exchange.
- Develop lasting professional networks with researchers across Europe and fellow members of the travelling cohort.
Financial support of up to £5,000 per Fellow will be provided by BORS and BJR towards reasonable travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. Registration fees for the EORS 2027 Annual Meeting will also be waived for selected Fellows.
The successful Fellows will work collaboratively with BORS, BJR and EORS to help develop the Fellowship itinerary, identifying European research centres that align with their research interests and objectives.
Eligibility
Applications are welcomed from early- and mid-career researchers working in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research, including clinicians, engineers, biologists and allied researchers.
Applicants must:
- Have been a BORS member in good standing since at least 1 August 2026.
- Have completed a PhD or equivalent research training, or demonstrate an equivalent level of research experience.
- Be undertaking or significantly contributing to orthopaedic or musculoskeletal research at a UK-based academic or clinical institution.
- Demonstrate research excellence appropriate to their career stage and previous engagement with BORS and the wider research community.
- Be available to participate in the full Fellowship programme in September 2027, including EORS 2027.
- Have the support of their employing institution, line manager or equivalent.

Applications are now open and will close on Friday 13 November 2026 at 17:00 GMT.
The application process comprises an initial written application followed by remote interviews for shortlisted candidates.
Applicants should submit a statement of up to 1,000 words addressing their research excellence and trajectory, engagement with BORS and BJR, case for the Fellowship, and anticipated impact and contribution.
A concise CV, up to five key research outputs, a statement of support and an applicant declaration are also required.
